Sorry

I’m sorry,

For salty tears upon your face,
For sorrow taking laughter’s place.
I know I’m pompous, foolish too—
I never meant to wound you.

I’m sorry,

For foolish words that I let fall,
For having little sense at all,
For fear of life, for shrinking back,
For all the tenderness I lack.

I’m sorry,

For stubbornness, for moods gone sour,
For cynicism, hour by hour,
For bathroom floors I leave still wet,
For drunken evenings I regret.

I’m sorry,

For never having time for you,
For every snore at night,
For chasing women at my age,
When I should know what’s right.

I’m sorry,

For flowers seldom brought your way,
For letting slip our special day,
For cloths unwrung, for that dropped pot—
For all the little things I forgot.

I’m sorry,

For never saying you’re my weakness,
The wings that lift me high,
My greatest love, my one ascension,
My only way to fly.

Sorry…
